Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women around the world. Every year, hundreds of thousands of women fall victim to the disease, and according to the World Cancer Research Fund International, there were a whopping 1.7 million new cases diagnosed in 2012 alone. It is a global issue that needs to be faced head on. Luckily, there is a large amount of support for this all too common disease. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month around the world and, in light of the time of year, I figured I would highlight a few breast cancer charities and organisations that would benefit greatly from your donations.
Breast Cancer Care
Founded in 1973, Breast Cancer Care is aimed at spreading awareness of breast cancer as well as assisting those suffering through it now. It was founded by Betty Westgate who had been diagnosed with breast cancer herself. Although she passed in 2000, the foundation continues to promote her legacy. The organisation provides a multitude of ways to support the cause. Breast Cancer Care holds several charity walks, runs, bike rides and even adrenaline events (skydiving). They even offer Big Pink Kits that contain information and tools necessary to hold private fundraising events. The organisation offers several other ways to get involved.
Breast Cancer Now
Breast Cancer Now, according to its website, is the UK’s largest breast cancer research charity, dedicated to eradicating the disease completely. The charity has funded nearly £24 million worth of highly advanced breast cancer research. They also hold public campaigns in order to raise awareness of the severity of the disease. Similar to Breast Cancer Care, you can hold private fundraisers in the organisation’s name as well as donate directly to Breast Cancer Now and even participate in sporting events.
Breast Cancer UK
Breast Cancer UK, very similarly to Breast Cancer Now and Breast Cancer Care, work tirelessly to make an impact in the ongoing search for a cure for breast cancer. Breast Cancer UK helps to fund scientific research, raise awareness and campaigns to public officials and legislature in order to improve public health policies in favour of breast cancer patients. Feel free to donate to any one of these organisations, as they are all amazing at what they do. Hopefully, through all of our efforts, we can make breast cancer a thing of the past.
